Wyndham Cottage is on the private historical estate of Camfield Place, Essendon, once home to Beatrix Potters’ grandfather and where a young Beatrix spent her summer holidays. Beatrix is said to have written the Tale of Peter Rabbit whilst staying on the estate, no doubt gleaning inspiration from the abundance of wildlife.
More recently Camfield has been the home to world famous novelist Dame Barbara Cartland and is still retained by her family. Barbara Cartland died in 2000 at the age of 98 and is buried on the Camfield Estate under a tree planted by Queen Elizabeth 1st. |
